Unhappy Recap: Phillies 5 Mets 3

The bullpen situation is starting to become very dire. Since Sanchez went out the bullpen has given up at least 2 runs in all 4 games and lost 3 of those 4. Tonight it was Oliver's turn, he gave up the go ahead home run to David Dellucci in the 7th.

The Phillies went on top 1-0 but the Mets came back with 2 in the third, one on a double by Beltran that was hit as hard as any ball I can remember. It seemed like it hit the bat, then I blinked and it hit the wall. Delgado hit a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1.

Things got weird in the next inning though. After a leadoff double and a sarcifice bunt, El Duque balked home a run. The balk was called by "Balkin" Bob Davidson, an umpire who is known for calling balks. But Ron Darling agreed it was the right call. El Duque was on the rubber, then he raised his right arm slightly, then stepped off. Willie came out to argue but of course to no avail. They obviously didn't even explain what he had done, because two batters later he balked again. But that runner moved to third and never came around to score.

El Duque got that run back though, hitting a triple on a misplayed fly ball and scoring on a single by Reyes.

But like all Mets pitchers he once again gave the lead right back. A single by Dellucci then a ripped double by Howard tied the game.

It stayed that way until Oliver allowed the homer in the 7th to make it 4-3. Pedro Feliciano pitched into trouble (thanks to an error by David Wright) in the 8th but got out of it. In the 9th Ryan Howard blasted an insurance run of Feliciano.

Chase Utley did go 0-5 ending his 35 game hitting streak. I was actually disappointed by that. I like Utley and think he's a great young player. I also enjoy the steady consistency of a long hitting streak.

David Wright is still in a slump, striking out with 2 on and 2 out in the first inning. He did walk twice (once intentionally) in the game. His average is down to .308, well below Paul Lo Duca.

Lastings Milledge is 1-8 since his recall, batting .223 overall.
