Happy Recap: Mets 2 Yankees 0
Thank God for Oliver Perez to stop this losing streak. Once again he came up big in a big game, only this time the game was big not only due to opponent but situation. The Mets did not want to begin this series with a loss.
This season Oliver Perez is 5-0 with a 1.26 ERA, a WHIP under 1 and a 4.4 K/BB ratio in 5 starts against the Yankees and the Braves, the Mets toughest opponents and fiercest rivals. That's a large enough sample size to infer that Perez pitches better in big games, especially when you include Game 7 of the NLCS last year.
Just to satisfy your curiosity, Perez is 2-5 with a 4.18 ERA and a 2 K/BB ratio against everyone else in the majors.
Perez actually had to work through some trouble in the first few innings but after he got that inning ending double play in the fourth he got 1-2-3 innings in the 5th, 6th and 7th, which is key to getting deeper in the game and limiting the Yankees at bats against your bullpen. In the 8th, after the Jeter double, Willie made the right move to use his situational relivers to get Abreu (Feliciano) and A-Rod (Joe Smith).
Joe Smith has pitched in two games against the Yankees, each time getting one batter. The first time he struck out Derek Jeter, the second time he got A-Rod to ground out. Both times preserved a lead for Oliver Perez to get the game to Wagner for the save.
That inning ending double play in the fourth came courtesy of Carlos Gomez who made an amazing catch, almost Endy-like, and doubled off the runner. The one thing that made this catch very difficult for Gomez was the stupid Yankees fans attempting to interfere, as this awesome picture clearly shows.
Gomez also had a good day at the plate, with two bunt singles, a stolen base and a run scored.
But the offensive star of the game was Jose Reyes, who not only drove in Gomez for the first run, but he homered off Clemens for the Mets other run.
And Reyes also led off the game with a hit, followed by a Beltran single, but Wright Delgado and LoDuca killed the rally.
